Traders Forum has announced Kevin Kane, of Great Canadian Dollar Store, as Retailer of the Year for 2007.  Kevin, based in New Brunswick, is the regional franchise representative for Atlantic Canada for the Great Canadian Dollar Store retail franchise.

After working 18 years as a Sobey’s store manager, Kevin became impressed in 1996 with the quality of items he saw his wife continuously bringing home from a newly opened dollar store.  So much so, he was intrigued enough to investigate dollar stores and after an extensive year of research he decided to purchase a dollar store retail franchise.

Fast forward 10 years and Kevin has grown from one store to 21 stores and from his initial 1,500 sq ft store in Quispamsis, NB to having the largest Great Canadian Dollar Store in Canada.

His success seems to be deep rooted in his commitment to offering products between $1 and $3 retail in his stores without going a penny over. Coupled with that is the fact that he has key staff that are involved in the ordering and merchandising of the stores they manage and are in tune to what their communities’ needs are.  This frees up his time to travel around and visit each of his stores. “I like being able to offer consumers product that is of better quality than a typical ‘dollar store’ because at the $3 range the items you can offer are better but still very affordable,” says Kevin.  

Great Canadian Dollar Store was established in 1993 by founders Bud and Vivian Walker. With stores across Canada from Victoria BC to St. John's NL to Whitehorse YK, the home office of Great Canadian Dollar Store is based in Victoria, BC.
