Not all business opportunities are franchises.

Similar to a franchise, a business opportunity is the sale of a system the licenser has cultivated and is confident it will be profitable when replicated. In addition, a franchise agreement is not a one-and-done thing. For the duration of the franchise agreement, franchisees retain the rights to operate a proven brand in a designated territory. They also enjoy ongoing support from the parent company foe virtually all areas of the business.

On the other side of the deal, by licensing out its business methods and pledging support to franchisees, the franchisor allows itself the opportunity to expand into areas it may have had difficulty expanding to without the extra money and manpower.

If you’re simply looking for a jumpstart and desire more flexibility, a business opportunity is probably the route for you. However, if you’re looking for more consistent support and can handle more restrictions (or desire more guidance) in the procedures of your business, a franchise might be the path for you.
